CHESTERFIELD have been involved in a few low-scoring games of late - so their fans were hoping they might upset the pecking order in League Two and bang a few in tonight at Cheltenham. It wasn’t to be!
They went down to a last minute goal after failing to find the net themselves.
Spireites had started off the evening at Whaddon Road in 14th spot, with Cheltenham in sixth.
Last Saturday’s win at Dagenham and Redbridge had given hope for another three points on the road.
Chesterfield last four games have been 1-0, 0-0, 0-1, and 0-1 scorelines and they were without Jack Lester with a virus last time out. Tonight, though, the veteran forward came on as a sub, yet couldn’t change the game.
Town took the game to the visitors in the early stages, Darren Carter forcing a save from Tommy Lee but Chesterfield stayed in the game and began to find their stride.
Sam Togwell had a dig from a fair way out and Armand Gnanduillet’s effort was saved by Scott Brown.
Gnanduillet was a pest and on the half hour mark, he tested Brown again, after a pass from James O’Shea,
Irish midfielder had a half chance too, inside the box, but the ball sailed over the bar.
Paul Cook’s men were doing well - but just needed a cutting edge.
Town’s Brummie midfielder Darren Carter caused a scare from inside the box but he missed his chance on 46 minutes.
Lester managed to get in a shot on 69 minutes but it was too high.
Sam Hird also had an effort from 30 yards but it was charged down.
With six minutes to go, Lester tried his luck with a shot from outside the box, but, alas, with no joy.
And then the final insult: a 90th minute goal from Paul Benson rocked the Spireites.
They had deserved at least a point.
