Caldwell: '˜I am the right man for the job'

Since the Scot arrived as Danny Wilson’s replacement at Chesterfield, they’ve only won once from 12 outings.

This week a Derbyshire Times survey of around 600 supporters revealed that just over two thirds say Caldwell is not the right man for the Spireites.

Obviously, he disagrees and is content that the club agree with him.

The 34-year-old said: “I firmly believe that (I am the right man), the club firmly believe that.

“Last year I won this league so I know what I’m doing and it’s going to take time to rebuild this football club and I’m firmly behind it.”

Chesterfield are 10 points from safety with just seven games left in the League One season.

Caldwell still believes an escape is possible even if the vast majority of supporters appear resigned to relegation.

“That’s 21 we can get so I think it’s still possible, the players still think it’s possible,” he said.

“We’re working and preparing to win games but we know it’s getting to the point where every game it’s crucial that we win it.

“I can see their (fans’) frustration with results, with certain areas of the game, but overall I think performances have been pretty good.

“Their frustration comes from the lack of winning games.”
