Gary Caldwell says it’s ‘outrageous’ that Jay O’Shea can face his parent club Chesterfield on Sunday.

The Irishman left the Proact for a loan spell with Sheffield United back in January.

And it emerged last week that the talented attacker is free to play against the Spireites when they visit Bramall Lane in the season finale this weekend.

For Caldwell it’s an unprecedented and ‘crazy’ scenario and he’s clearly staggered that it wasn’t part of the deal that O’Shea was kept out of the fixture.

“The fact that he can play, I’ve never heard of it in my life before,” he said.

“It was out of my control at the time of the transfer but I think it’s outrageous that he can play.”

It’s a situation that Caldwell is determined not to encounter again as Town manager.

He’s keen to take a more hands on approach with future transfer dealings.

“You obviously take control of the transfer dealings when they happen, but like I say it wasn’t in my remit at the time,” he said.

“It won’t happen in the future.”

O’Shea might be contracted to Chesterfield until the end of the season but Caldwell doesn’t expect him to return to the Proact to rejoin the already-relegated club.

“He wanted to leave the club and go and play somewhere else in January,” said the Scot.

“I couldn’t imagine that has changed up until now.”
