Portsmouth have completed the signing of Gary Roberts from Chesterfield for an undisclosed fee.

The move sees Roberts follow in former manager Paul Cook, who made the same switch last month, to join League Two side Pompey.

Dean Saunders, the man who replaced Cook in the Spireites hot seat, had wanted to keep hold of the influential midfield man.

But Chesterfield chief executive Chris Turner said it was clear the 31-year-old wanted to reunite with Cook at Fratton Park.

Turner said: “At the age of 31, Gary has understandably been lured by the offer of a three-year contract.

“We felt it would not have been in the best interests of the club to have given him a similar deal.

“We only agreed to sell Gary when Portsmouth returned with an improved offer after we turned down their initial bid.

“Dean Saunders wanted to keep Gary and had several conversations with him, trying to persuade him to stay, but he was adamant that he wanted to join Portsmouth.

“Gary was an instrumental figure in our League Two title-winning side and on behalf of the club I would like to thank him for his valuable contribution and wish him all the best for the future.”

Roberts made 89 appearances, scoring 20 goals, for the Spireites in two years and played a key role in the League Two title winning campaign and last season’s sixth-placed finish.
