'˜A joke, a travesty, a sickener' - Wilson frustrated by Gillingham draw

Danny Wilson said the last gasp equaliser his side gifted Gillingham was a '˜travesty' and blasted the second of the visitors' two penalties as a '˜joke.'

The Spireites boss was left frustrated after his side threw away a two-goal lead to draw 3-3 at home with the Gills, despite dominating much of the game at the Proact.

A poor Gills performance went unpunished largely thanks to two penalty awards, the first a correct one in Wilson’s eyes and the second one very debateable.

He said: “It was a sickener. The whole game we’ve controlled large parts again, the goals we’ve conceded are arguable. The second penalty is a joke.

“The first one we’ll accept.

“The third goal is a travesty, how we’ve given it away. Two bad decisions, a back header and then we don’t save it and we’ve lost the lad at the far post. That’s in the 95th minute.

After playing so well and dominating the game it’s a real sickener.”

The last gasp equaliser for Gillingham was well finished by Scott Wagstaff but the lead up to it was disappointing from Wilson’s viewpoint.

“Ryan (Fulton, goalkeeper) has been brilliant for us but he rattles a ball into the stand and there’s no need for it,” he said.

“That put us on the back foot, then from the throw in one thing leads to another and they’re in. The shot at the end of it wasn’t particularly hard. I’m sure Ryan is gutted with it, he should save those.

“It was a continuation of one mistake after another.”

As disappointing as the result was for Chesterfield, having led deservedly, Wilson was able to pick out positives.

“I thought we played very well,” he insisted.

“When the ball went up to the front lads we created a lot of chances first half, in the second half in certain areas we caused them real problems.

“There’s lots of positives. Jon Nolan was outstanding at times today.

“The full-backs have not let themselves down at all. We’ve had a makeshift side in some respects.

“We’ve got that many injuries and young lads coming in with no experience and now we know we can trust them - Laurence can come in at any time now and can also play centre-back and Liam has done well in the games he’s played.”
