Fabio Capello was “p***ed off” with the events leading to his departure as England coach and is adamant he could have taken the team further than successor Roy Hodgson at Euro 2012.
The Italian resigned after John Terry was stripped of the national team captaincy by the FA while awaiting trial on allegations of racial abuse. The Chelsea star was cleared earlier this month.
After being named as Russia’s new head coach Capello reflected on the acrimonious end to his time in England.
He told several national newspapers: “If I were with your guys during the European Championship, it would have been even better.
“We had qualified for the finals and it was only the John Terry story that meant I couldn’t go to the finals.
“It was in my contract that the decision as to who would be captain should be made only by the coach. After what happened, I was p***ed off and I wanted to stop.”
