DONCASTER Rovers Belles failed to prevent title favourites Arsenal Ladies from completing a WSL double in yesterday’s return in the capital.
The second-placed Gunners, who have a game in hand over leaders Birmingham, repeated their 3-0 victory at the Keepmoat Stadium earlier in the season.
The London side will be crowned champions if they beat Everton and bottom club Liverpool in their last two games.
“It was a similar sort of game to the one Keepmoat,” Belles’ manager John Buckley told The Star.
“We came in 1-0 down but we’d done well and felt that we’d been equal to them.
“But they are a good side and are paying out a lot more money than we can afford.
“They had more of a cutting edge in the final third and added two more goals in the second half on 77 and 91 minutes.”
He added: “It is really difficult to compete with teams like Arsenal but there were some good performances in there and we’ve just got to keep going with it.”
Aine O’Gorman went closest to opening Belles’ account on 28 minutes after Arsenal had failed to convert a couple of earlier chances.
“We’ve got a lot of kids and they are just learning the game at this level. They are doing well; they just need to learn to make the right decisions and where to be”
Belles take on Lincoln Ladies at the Keepmoat Stadium on Thursday (7.45) in their penultimate game of the season.
Belles will be looking to record their first double.
