Warning to Sheffield Wednesday: We'll beat you again

BARNSLEY boss Simon Davey has lit the touch-paper for next season's opening derby fixture by backing his side to upset local rivals Sheffield Wednesday again.

The Reds have been drawn away to the Owls for the Saturday August 8 Championship curtain raiser.

And having beaten Brian Laws' team twice last season in the league, Davey is confident his team can again get one over their rivals.

"It would be a great way to start the season if we beat them," Davey told The Star. "We beat them last season, so there's no reason we can't beat them again this season, if we perform.

"You don't get much bigger games than this, a local derby with Wednesday on the first day of the season is a huge game.

"I'm really looking forward to it, it's very rare you get to play a derby on the opening day...but we've got nothing to fear.

"Wednesday are a really good side and I'm sure they'll be a great atmosphere because you're guaranteed a lot of fans will go to the game."

Goals from Iain Hume and Jamal Campbell-Ryce saw the Reds beat the Owls 2-1 at home last season, while a Campbell-Ryce strike sealed a 1-0 victory at Hillsborough.

Davey added: "It would have been nice to start the season at Oakwell with a home game, but we go straight into a massive derby.

"We'll be looking to start the season with a win at one of our biggest rivals."

But Owls boss Laws is in no mood for a repeat: "We didn't get the results we wanted against Barnsley last season so it is good that we have an opportunity to redress that on the first day of the new campaign.

"It's a fantastic fixture to start the season. It will also be important for us to get off to a good start."
