Unbeaten run signals play-offs bid says Foster

BARNSLEY skipper Stephen Foster is delighted with the club's impressive eight game unbeaten run.

But the Reds defender has challenged himself and his teammates to do even better having finally shown their ability under new boss Mark Robins.

Three seasons spent battling at the wrong end of the Championship table has been replaced by the Reds having moved up to 15th in the table, just seven points away from the play-offs and with two games in hand on teams above them with recent postponements with Plymouth Argyle and Preston North End.

And so it's little wonder Foster, boosted by a fine 2-1 home win against former Premiership opposition Middlesbrough in their last match, is in confident mood as 2010 approaches.

He said: "We should be setting our standards high and looking towards the top-of-the-table and towards the play-offs, because when you look around the squad there is a lot of ability and a lot of good players. The Christmas period is always difficult time, especially with the number of games, but you're always aware that if you can produce some good results over the period you can find yourselves in a great position come the New Year."

Looking back on 2009 and last season, the former Burnley and Crewe centre-back admits there have been many highs and lows, but is relieved that the Reds are now starting to show signs of fulfilling their potential.

And that's in no small part due to the arrival of Robins, who ha transformed Oakwell fortunes since he left the Millers and Foster said: "The gaffer has come in with different ideas and his approach to the game, different ideas for training and so far, so good."
