DEFENDER Stephen Foster has called for all of Barnsley players to be “leaders” as the club try to halt an alarming run of nine games without a win.
Foster believes “poor” goals have cost the Reds in recent weeks with the club having slipped to just one place above the Championship relegation zone.
The experienced centre-back, who has had to be patient for his chances this season, is adamant the only way to get out of trouble is to be united in their quest to rediscover their form.
“At the moment the team isn’t doing well,” said former skipper Foster. “The captaincy thing doesn’t bother me at all, but I want to be playing. The captaincy isn’t a big thing really, but we should all be leaders on the pitch and pushing each other.”
The Reds were thumped 4-1 away to Watford last weekend and have conceded 17 goals and scored only six in that run of nine games which has yielded only three points, a daunting prospect as they head for Leicester today.
“We’re conceding poor goals; that’s the main problem,” admitted Foster. “In the games when we’re on top we’re managing to undo it all with mistakes.
“We need to make sure we continue to play the way we are going forward, but making sure we keep it tight at the back.
“It always hurts. Losing games always hurts. That will never change.
“A win would help our confidence. Confidence certainly isn’t at it’s highest, but we’re training hard and playing some decent stuff, so promising signs there.
“From experience you don’t want to get too high or too low, but you’ve got to work hard to put things right.”
