BARNSLEY keeper Luke Steele has called for the club’s supporters to back new boss David Flitcroft as the Reds continue their battle to avoid the drop.
Former Manchester United shot-stopper Steele has not looked back since regaining the number one jersey ahead of Ben Alnwick.
And the 28-year-old has stressed he will continue to give every ounce of effort to help the club retain their Championship status.
“There’s only one thing in my mind right now - and that’s the challenge of trying to help us stay in the Championship,” revealed Steele, speaking exclusively to The Star.
“I’m really happy Flicker has got the job. I suppose I should be calling him ‘Gaffer’ now.
“Things are settled now and that’s all the players ever wanted, to be honest.
“He does a lot of little things which are different to when Keith [Hill] was in charge, but at the same time I’ve seen a side to him I’ve never seen before.
“He’s the top man now and he’ll make the decisions.”
One of Flitcroft’s major changes has been to play three central defenders with wing-backs, a formation which has helped to yield back-to-back wins.
And Steele believes Flitcroft has earned extra praise for staying loyal to the club even though Sean O’Driscoll and Terry Butcher were the club’s preferred choices before he was promoted from caretaker boss.
“I don’t think he was expecting to get the job,”admitted Steele. “He’s been so loyal and not showed one ounce of selfishness. His belief has rubbed off on the players and I think that’s been reflected in our last couple of results. He’s shown that he can manage at this level.”
