Steele staying with Reds for next season
BARNSLEY keeper Luke Steele ended speculation about him leaving the club by signing a new deal ... and now he just wants to focus on next season.
Towards the back end of last season, Steele admitted that he had talked to other clubs about a possible move away from Oakwell: "At the time I was looking elsewhere. I wasn't happy, but I got more games at the end of the season and I'm happy to stay."
The 24-year-old stopper had grown frustrated at a lack of first-team opportunities, but Reds boss Simon Davey showed faith in Steele, after number one Heinz Muller, had made a string of mistakes that cost the Tykes points.
With Steele in goal, Barnsley picked up six points from their last four games to preserve their Championship status.
It has been an intriguing battle for the Number 1 slot at Oakwell and with Muller on his way to German club FSV Mainz 05, Steele could finally become chief custodian.
Steele said that he was uncertain about Muller's future, but whatever the outcome wishes him luck: "Heinz is a good goalkeeper. Whatever happens I hope it goes well for him."
Steele was disappointed with how last season panned out for the Tykes, but is hopeful that they will fair better in the Championship next term.
