Scott is ready for Reds challenge

Goal start: Scott Golbourne

YOUNG gun Scott Golbourne is confident he can blossom at Barnsley.

The former Exeter City recruit, signed before the transfer window closed, had an immediate effect on his debut away at Watford.

Introduced as a second half sub, the 23-year-old left-back needed just 28 minutes to score his first goal for his new club.

It was Golbourne’s first goal for nearly a year having last scored for Exeter last April in a 2-0 home win over Oldham.

“I’m really pleased with the way I played, I was happy to get on the pitch,” reflected Golbourne, who was introduced with the Reds trailing 2-0.

“As a left-back sometimes when you’re losing the game you don’t expect to get on, it’s usually the strikers that come on to try and make an impact.

“To score capped off a nice debut for me, but playing was the most important thing.

“It was just a shame we couldn’t get the points as well, that would have capped it off nicely.

“I hadn’t scored this season, but I got a couple last season. Hopefully that’s the first of many for the club.”

Golbourne admits he has no fears of trying to cement a career in the Championship having spent the last few seasons plying his trade in League’s One and Two.

At former club Reading he had a taste of the Premier League, playing twice during a three-year stint at the club, much of which was spent out on loan.

But with the Grecians, the former Bristol City youth scholar tasted sweet success during the club’s 2010 League One promotion and played over 100 times for the club before Reds’ boss Keith Hill handed him the opportunity to further his promising career at Oakwell.

“It’s a bit of a step up and I’m sure I’m going to come up against different opposition and a different standard, but I’m looking forward to that,” he said. “That’s the challenge for me. It’s a bit more composed than League One, you get a little bit more time on the ball and the game is more structured.

“It’s not so much about scaring the opposition, but it’s still a very physical level. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
