Rowing: David won’t be flitting

DAVID Flitcroft will remain a highly-valued and pivotal member of the Barnsley management team for the forseeable future at least.

Reds fans were stunned on Sunday when speculation surfaced linking Flitcroft with a switch back to his former club Rochdale, who he left last summer when he joined Barnsley as Keith Hill’s number two.

It was even reported that the Spotland outfit had sought permission to speak to Flitcroft as they continue their search for a replacement for Steve Eyre, who was sacked by the League One strugglers last month. The speculation has since been comprehensively rubbished by Reds director Don Rowing who, speaking to The Star, has now sung Flitcroft and Hill’s praises once again.

Rowing said: “I must admit it was a bit off-putting to read some of the stories that emerged on Sunday regarding David. I just don’t know where these ideas come from.

“Of course we give the stories no credence whatsoever. From our point of view David and Keith are signed up to do a job here and they will carry this club forward.

“Keith and David are very, very close, they’ve very much come here as a team and they are very much together in the way they both think about the game. “They both have great vision and they’ve embraced the way the club works.

“Keith and David will continue trying to improve things and although it is difficult in this current economic climate, I think the progress we’ve made since the summer is there for everyone to see.”

The Star can also reveal that Rochdale’s caretaker manager Chris Beech is a strong favourite with Spotland chiefs to take over from Eyre permanently.

Barnsley FC Supporters’ Trust forum takes place tonight in the Oakwell Legends Suite (7pm). Admission is free to Trust members. Non-members and guests £2.
