Reds keeper Steele keeps options open

BARNSLEY goalkeeper Luke Steele would love to stay at Oakwell, but has revealed he has attracted the interest of a number of other clubs.

The former Manchester United shot-stopper made just 11 appearances for the Tykes last season with German keeper Heinz Muller the preferred choice of boss Simon Davey.

But Steele came back into the first-team fold towards the end of the season and played a significant role in helping the club avoid relegation.

Davey last month offered the 24-year-old a new two-year deal to stay at the club. However, as much as Steele wants to stay at Barnsley, the 6ft 2" keeper is assessing his options.

"I've been talking to Barnsley, but they know that there are few other clubs in the mix," Steele told The Star.

"Hopefully we can sort something out, but I've been talking to a few clubs. I can't really say who those clubs are, but there's been some good interest in me.

"I think it helped that I played towards the end of last season, some people will have taken note that I'm still around and still able to perform at Championship level."

Steele's ultimate aim is to be the No 1 goalkeeper at Oakwell and, having been frustrated by a lack of opportunities, was pleased that Davey offered him a two-year deal.

"It could have been just one year deal like a few of the other players got offered, but the manager has shown faith in me and obviously considers me in his plans" added Steele.

"I really like this club, the fans have been great even though I've not really played a lot of games, especially last season. I feel as though I've got something to prove to them, to really show how good I can be.

"You want to play more than 11 games in a season. It's nothing to do with money it's about wanting to be the No 1 at the club. Me and Heinz get on great, but I don't want to be in his shadow for another season.

"It was the longest I've gone without playing a professional game.

"It's a privilege to be the No 1 and I'd like to achieve that, hopefully with Barnsley but if not it might have to be with another club."
