Reds step up striker hunt

BARNSLEY boss Simon Davey continued his search for a striker, handing a German trialist a start in the draw at York City last night.

Officials declined to name the centre forward, who started alongside Jon Macken in the first half and then played in a three man strike force with Kayode Odejayi in the second half.

Macken saved Barnsley blushes at the Conference team, salvaging a draw with his second goal of the game in the 89th minute.

A double bonus for Davey was that Rob Kozluk and Brian Howard, who were fitness doubts as late as Monday afternoon, declared themselves fit and came through the entire 90 minutes at Kit Kat Crescent.

It was a corner from skipper Howard that led to Macken's second goal a minute from time.

His first was a tap in following a centre from new signing Mounir El Haimour.

Macken has four goals so far this summer.

He struck twice in the first of the friendlies at Buxton.

Barnsley are next in action on Saturday when they tackle Rotherham United at the Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield.

Rotherham defeated League One side Scunthorpe United 2-1 last night.

Barnsley will check on casualties Luke Steele, Jamal Campbell-Ryce, Hugo Colace, Martin Devaney, Istvan Ferenczi, Marciano van Homoet and Iain Hume when they return to training tomorrow.

Meanwhile, former Barnsley keeper Scott Flinders is on trial at Chesterfield. He played for the League Two club last night as they suffered a 3-0 defeat to Hull.
