Reds face compensation claim over Sodje move
ONOME Sodje's move to Barnsley may now be decided by a FA tribunal.
The Nigerian striker signed for the Reds last week from Blue Square Premier side York City, but Minstermen director Sophie Hicks has revealed that City might now be entitled to compensation because of exceptional circumstances regarding the move.
Hicks claims Sodje turned his back on his club despite a promise to sign a new two-year deal this summer.
According to Hicks the player had not been employable on a professional basis, but thanks to the help of City and a Home Office appeal was allowed to stay and play in the country. Only two months ago Sodje signed a two-year deal with City.
But Hicks claims JM Packaging – the company owned by club chairman Jason McGill – provided 5,000 to cover the legal costs in the case.
It was believed that Sodje would stay with City as a thanks for all their help, although Hicks revealed that the Reds tried to sign the player two seasons ago.
"We have assisted Onome on a personal basis to further his development as a footballer in the UK since his arrival at York City two years ago," said Hicks.
"But we offered him a contract for the new season and we are disappointed he has not communicated with the manager or the chairman.
"He's not even had the courtesy to return any calls, or even inform York City that he intended to join another club."
Meanwhile, the Reds' Carling Cup first round clash away to Lincoln City at Sincil Bank has been confirmed for Tuesday 11th August (7.45pm kick off).
Tickets for the club's pre-season friendlies, including eagerly-anticipated clashes with Manchester City (1 August) and Ferencvaros (11 July), are now sale at the Oakwell box office.
Fans will get free admission to both of these matches if they buy a season ticket before the end of June.
