Potter makes most of last Reds chance
LUKE Potter is hungry to take his chance at Barnsley this season - because he knows it might be his last.
The promising defender signed a one year contract at Oakwell ahead of the new Championship season.
But alongside the club's other gifted youngsters, he reckons it's make-or-break to try to break into the first team.
"It's been really frustrating having not played, but the manager has told me there will be opportunities this season," Potter told The Star. "It's up to me to take those opportunities, being a Barnsley lad all I've ever wanted to do is play for the first team."
Potter made his debut for the Reds in 2007 in a 7-0 opening day thrashing at the hands of West Brom - and the 19-year-old hasn't played since.
Later that season Potter spent two months on loan at Stafford Rangers, before he joined Kettering Town on loan in the January transfer window. Kettering nearly got promoted from the Blue Square Premier League and Potter admits the experience was beneficial because he was playing regular football.
"I was playing two games of football a week, which was great," he added. "We were in the hunt to get promoted and I was getting a few games under my belt. But I'm back at Barnsley now and I want to break into the first team."
And Potter knows life won't be easy with no Reds reserve team this season, a platform which in the past has given boss Simon Davey the chance to cast his eye over his young hopefuls including Jacob Butterfield, Reuben Noble-Lazarus, Jordan Hibbert and Michael Coulson.
"I've just got to keep training hard and get my head down to get in the side. It's good competition for me, I enjoy training with the older players like Darren Moore and Rob Kozluk because they're always encouraging you to do well.
"It seems a long time ago since my debut, I just feel now that I just need a chance to get a few games under my belt and show the manager and fans what I can do."
