Old boy Shackell braced for hostile reception

FORMER Barnsley skipper Jason Shackell knows what he’s in for when he returns to his old stamping ground on Tuesday night.

Now plying his trade at Derby County, Shackell left Oakwell in acrimonious circumstances with two years left on his contract.

But the 28-year-old has vowed not to let the Barnsley boo-boys distract his focus as the Rams go in search of victory in South Yorkshire.

“I have a feeling it’s going to be a little bit hostile, but that doesn’t bother me,” Shackell told The Star.

“I had a fantastic year at Barnsley and really enjoyed myself, but you’ve got to do what’s right for your career and for your family.

“It’s a short career and I felt it was the right time to leave the club. You live and die by your decisions, but I’m happy with the decision I made.

“Some of the Barnsley fans are going to give me stick, but that’s to be expected.

“But I think the majority of the supporters know I gave everything when I was at the club and my performances showed that.”

Shackell has settled at Pride Park this season and has made 27 appearances having established himself as a regular in Nigel Clough’s side.

“I still get a few texts from Bobby Hassell and speak to a few of the lads. I keep in touch,” added Shackell.

“It will be good to see them. I’ll probably have a chat to a few of them before the match,

“Barnsley are doing well and under Keith Hill, they play attractive football.

“I was really impressed with them when they came to our place. They played good football and we had to fight hard in that game to get a draw after we’d gone 1-0 down but they’re going to miss Butts [Jacob Butterfield] and Danny Drinkwater.”
