Mack: 'I'm ready to sign new deal'
BARNSLEY striker Jon Macken is ready to sign a new one-year contract at the club.
The former Manchester City, Preston and Derby hitman finished the season as the Reds' joint top-scorer alongside Jamal Campbell-Ryce – with nine goals each.
And still going strong at 31 the Blackley-born goalscorer has been rewarded with a contract extension by Reds boss Simon Davey.
"I'm looking to sign, I want to stay at the club," Macken told the Star. "I really enjoyed last season, to be honest I didn't want it to end.
"Of course we were struggling, but we proved we can compete with the best teams and I was scoring goals as well.
"I've just got back from my holiday, but I'll hopefully be going into the club next week to sign my new contract. I'm already looking forward to next season."
And Macken is relishing the challenge of trying to secure a regular first team berth again with the anticipated return of 1.2 million striker Iain Hume and competition for a place with fellow forwards Daniel Bogdanovic and Michael Coulson.
"All football clubs have players coming in and going out, but as long as you're performing and playing well then you shouldn't be worrying about your place," added Macken.
"Iain Hume will be like a new signing for us when he comes back, there's going to be a buzz about the place.
"But I've been around long enough to know that if I keep scoring goals then I've got a great chance of starting every week. That's the challenge for me."
