Loan ace happy to be playing again after lay-off
NEW arrival Korey Smith wants to make the best of his time in South Yorkshire, especially because he doesn’t know how long his loan spell at Oakwell will last.
The Norwich City midfielder starred on his debut on Tuesday night as the Reds beat Derby County 3-2.
Two assists on his birthday capped a memorable evening for the 21-year-old who, having signed on a temporary basis until 24 February, can potentially play four more games for the Reds until his loan expires or is extended.
“I can’t predict the future, I don’t know what’s going to happen,” revealed Smith. “Barnsley might not want me for longer and Norwich not want me to stay for longer.
“Those sort of decisions are in the hands of people higher than me, so all I can do is to do my best on the pitch and what happens after that is out of my control.
“Norwich think highly of me. I’ve done well for them in the past couple of seasons getting back to back promotions.
“But I’ve been injured a while and I just want to be back playing football. That’s all I want to concentrate on right now.
“I’ve only played one game, but I don’t want to get ahead of myself because I’ve still got a lot more to go.
“I want to stay fit, get some games under my belt and do well. I’m a winner, I like winning games.”
Smith travelled to Watford yesterday with the rest of the Reds squad as they went to London a day earlier in preparation for this afternoon’s clash with the Hornets.
But boss Keith Hill was without three players with winger Jim O’Brien, midfielder Stephen Dawson and defender Jay McEveley all absent.
O’Brien is expected to be out for another two weeks with a groin injury, new signing Dawson is not match fit having been injured for a month while at his former club Leyton Orient, while left-back McEveley has had an injection for a knee injury.
Smith, who looks poised to start for the second game in a row in the heart of the Reds’ midfield, added: “I’ve been out of football for a while and I just wanted to get back playing.”
