Loan ace says no to Reds
LEWIN Nyatanga's agent has poured cold water on the prospect of him returning to Oakwell.
The centre-half, who played for Wales in their 1-0 win in Iceland last night, will stay at Derby and fight for a place in their Championship side, claims agent Dean Sheehan of Cardiff-based company Definitive.
It appears to be a blow to Simon Davey's hopes of keeping the defender who was a loan hit at Oakwell.
Davey has been waiting for a firm answer as Nyatanga studies his options, and the Reds manager made contingency plans in case the player said no.
Nyatanga also has been linked with Nottingham Forest and Sheehan said he has rejected two offers to play in Spain.
"As far as we are concerned, Lewin has three years left at Derby and he will stay and fight for his place," said Sheehan.
"I wouldn't be saying this if Paul Jewell had given us any indication that he didn't want Lewin to do just that.
"Lewin has just completed another full season in the Championship and the club he played for on loan is desperate to have him back. What does that tell you about his ability?
"Forest boss Colin Calderwood has not phoned me. As far as I am concerned, that is just another rumour."
Nyatanga has 21 caps for Wales and is set to play against Holland in Rotterdam on Sunday.
Sheehan said: "Centre-halves do not hit their best until they are 28 and then tend to play for as long as goalkeepers. That is why Lewin is not rushing in to anything. That is why we have said no to the two Spanish clubs that have approached us."
Barnsley are to play Sheffield United's sister club, Chengdu Blades, from China, in a friendly at Oakwell on Saturday, August 2 (3pm).
Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday could be ready to offload striker Leon Clarke during this summer.
It is been claimed that the forward fancies a move back to Southend and that the Shrimpers may see him as the answer to their search for a striker.
The Owls will wait to see whether or not they receive a bid.
If they do get a reasonable offer - whether it is from Southend or another club - it is almost certain that they would cash in.
