If you're good enough you're old enough

BARNSLEY boss Simon Davey says he wants young talent at the club to push for a place in the first team.

Just after securing the immediate future of the club's record-breaking youngster, Reuben Noble-Lazarus, Davey said that he is one of several talented young players at Oakwell.

"We've got a lot of talented young players at the club and it's in their hands to try and break into the first team," said Davey.

"There's definitely a place for young players; we've got a good core of players here but there's always space for youth."

Davey made it a record-breaking moment when he handed Noble-Lazarus a debut last season - at 15 years and 45 days, he became the youngest Football League player ever.

"There's going to be added pressure on him because he's so young, so we've got to make sure we look after him properly and help his development," Davey added.

"Unless you're a Wayne Rooney then it's always going to be hard to keep a regular place, but I'm sure we'll see a lot of more of Reuben. He's an exciting talent."

Towards the end of the season, Noble-Lazarus had a two-week trial with Manchester United and a number of other clubs were also rumoured to be interested in his signature.

But the Hudderfield-born youngster, who is sitting his GCSE exams, has been at Barnsley since he was 12 and was happy to sign a two=year professional deal at Oakwell.

"It's great that Rebuen has signed a professional contract with us," added Davey.

Meanwhile, Barnsley have announced a sixth pre-season friendly.

They will face UniBond Premier League side Frickley Athletic at the Tech5 Stadium on Tuesday July 21 (7.30).

That is the same night the Reds send a side to Gainsborough Trinity.

Other confirmed pre-season fixtures are: Buxton (a) Thursday July 9 (7.45); Ferencvaros (h) Saturday July 11 (3pm); Bradford City (a) Saturday July 25 and Manchester City (h) Saturday August 1.
