‘Glue’ Greening determined to help Reds end their sticky patch

JONATHAN Greening is confident he can be the glue that holds together Barnsley’s midfield.

The former Manchester United and Fulham midfielder has been recruited by Reds boss Keith Hill to bring solidity in the centre of the park.

And moreover Hill has likened Greening to a “handbrake”, brought in to steady the ship and prevent the Reds being caught on the counter-attack which has caused their downfall in previous expeditions.

“You’d better not tell my wife that he’s said that because she’d totally slam the brakes on,” joked Greening.

“But in all seriousness I do like to get on the ball, pass it easy and keep things ticking away.

“I’ve played quite a lot of games over my career and have a lot of experience, so hopefully that can help and help some of the younger lads. I’m just eager to play football and get some minutes under my belt. I want to do well and help them get some points on the board.”

Greening, aged 33, who won a Champions League winners’ medal with Manchester United, came off the bench to play in the Europa League final with Fulham and who captained West Brom to Premier League promotion, is adamant he has plenty to offer the Reds in the Championship.

“I was part of a West Brom team who passed the ball really well and under Sean O’Driscoll [at Forest] who likes to pass the ball as well,” added Greening. “I think when Sean pulled me in and asked me about a move he knew I’d be buzzing; he’s known for a couple of months that I wanted to go out and play. He said it’s the perfect fit because he understands how Keith Hill likes to play and thinks it will work for me.”
