Drinkwater stars as Gray double earns victory

CLASSY Barnsley were the kings at the King Power Stadium as Leicester’s millionaires were humbled thanks to Andy Gray’s first-half double.

The opening 10 minutes had been littered with niggly fouls from both sides, but in the 12th minute it was the Reds who snatched the lead with a sublimely-worked goal.

It started with Addison’s long ball down the left to Vaz Te. He twisted and turned before nudging the ball to Drinkwater, who was left with the simple task of squaring for Gray who couldn’t miss from six yards as Schmeichel was powerless.

Sadly Barnsley’s lead was to last just three minutes as the Foxes equalised with a much more straight forward goal – although it was brilliantly taken.

Skipper Mills played a hopeful ball forward from the back, but Dyer controlled it excellently on his chest before swivelling and squeezing a low shot past Steele and right into the corner.

It was to be the Reds who surged back in front 11 minutes before the interval though – and courtesy of another tasty goal.

It was another close range header this time from Gray, but it came after a cheeky backheel from Vaz Te had set Drinkwater up to curl in a sweet cross.

The boo’s rang around the stadium this time, but in truth Leicester had seen themselves twice carved open by some sumptuous football from Barnsley.

Vaz Te missed a couple of gilt-edged chances to make it 3-1 just after the restart. On both occasions the Portuguese front-man was clear on goal, but Konchesky scrambled back to clear, then Schmeichel timed his challenge to perfection and cleared the danger.

That truly stung Leicester into action and Wellens headed against the crossbar following an almighty scramble in the Reds’ six-yard box.

Barnsley Drinkwater had been the star turn today after direct proceedings quite majestically from the heart of the midfield.
