DEFENDER Jim McNulty believes Barnsley’s half-term report should read: ‘Good, but can still do better’.

McNulty, who Reds boss Keith Hill drafted in on a free transfer from Brighton last summer, firmly believes that the fans are being wowed by some of the football they’ve seen this season, and has not ruled out a tilt at the play-offs.

McNulty said: “Overall I feel we have done well during the first half of the season. But, probably most importantly, all the players and the management have learned so much.

“In terms of money and budgets, the gaffer is a little less able to do things than some teams in this division, so that can be difficult, but it’s been a tremendous ride so far. The gaffer is a really likeable guy but a great manager too, so there is plenty to be encouraged about.

“We’ve had a couple of poorer performances of late – and have been made fully aware of it – but all the players are determined to have a better run-in to the end of the season. A couple of new signings in January might make a difference. But whatever happens this month, we want to try and be nudging around the play-off places.

“To be flirting with the top six really would be a dream season for us. It can change week to week though. If we put another winning run together then we can be right up there again.”

It is believed the Reds, who travel to big-spending Leicester City this weekend, have rejected an approach from Charlton for Danny Haynes.
