BARNSLEY have a signed Exeter City defender Scott Goldbourne on a two and a half year deal, but leading scorer Ricardo Vaz Te could leave today.

Reds boss Keith Hill revealed the club turned down a “not great, but not disrespectful” offer for Vaz Te from fellow Championship side West Ham yesterday.

“It’s going to be very difficult to keep Ricardo because he’s decided not to enter in contract negotiations with us,” revealed Hill. “Something could happen in the next 24 hours. It’s just a shame sometimes we don’t get offers in which are market value.

“I’d really like to keep him but I accept losing your best players is part and parcel of football. I’ve seen it before at Rochdale; it’s no different here. It makes like difficult because you have to start rebuilding again.”

The club had better news when Goldbourne, a 23-year-old left-back completed a medical and signed for an undisclosed fee.

The former Bristol City player is Hill’s third signing this month, with Stoke City’s Michael Tonge and Norwich City’s Korey Smith, both midfielders, arriving on loan.

“It’s great to have signed Scott, the deal’s done and dusted,” Hill said.

“His preferred position is at left-back, but he fits the DNA we’re looking for and can play on the left side of midfielder or in a central position. I’ve known about Scott for a long time because I follow Paul Tisdale at Exeter City. He’s a manager I’ve got great respect for; I like the way he coaches and manages his sides.

“Signing Scott creates plenty of competition for places. Jimmy McNulty can play at left-back but I don’t want to move him from playing at centre-back because he’s done really well there this season.”

The Reds host Derby County tonight with Tonge and Smith likely to feature.Barnsley are expected to sign Leyton Orient midfielder Stephen Dawson today.

French trialist Yannick Boli will not be offered a deal to stay at Oakwell.
