Davey steps up search for 'cover' keeper

SIMON Davey is well aware of the need to sign another keeper as cover for club No 1 Luke Steele.

German shot-stopper Heinz Muller and third-choice keeper Kyle Letheren have both left Oakwell.

Earlier this month Muller, who played for the Reds for two seasons, left the club to join German outfit FSV Mainz 05 for a 600,000 three-year contract.

Letheren, meanwhile, spent most of last season on loan at Doncaster Rovers, having started his career as a promising youngster at Swansea City.

Son of former Leeds United keeper Glan Letheren, the 21-year-old failed to earn a first team debut at Barnsley.

"We're looking to get a No 2 in to push Luke Steele hard, we want a player that is able to step into the No 1 position at any time," Davey told The Star.

"No disrespect to Kyle because he's a good young keeper, but we didn't feel he had the experience or the pedigree to fill that role. It's a hard position to fill, especially in this division. It's not ideal that we've not managed to bring in a few new players, but there's still time to do some deals."

Former Manchester United ace Steele spent most of his time on the sidelines last season, but Davey rewarded the 24-year-old with a new two-year deal at the club.

And the Welshman is confident the Peterborough-born professional will prove his worth when the new season kicks off on Saturday August 8 away to Sheffield Wednesday.

Davey added: "We need cover for Luke and we'd like to sign a few more players. We're still looking at trying to find another striker and maybe fill another position or two."

Thus far Muller, Letheren, Dennis Sousa, Marciao Van Homoet and Diego Leon have left the club with loan signings Adam Hammill (Liverpool), Andranik Teymourian (Fulham), Michael Mifsud (Coventry) and Maceo Rigters (Blackburn) having returned to their clubs.
