Davey staying says owner

BARNSLEY owner Patrick Cryne has dismissed claims that manager Simon Davey has three games to save his job.

Reports appeared yesterday placing the young boss in jeopardy but Cryne insisted: "That is complete nonsense. It is Simon's job and remains so."

Barnsley have lost all four of their matches so far this season and are bottom of the Championship.

Cryne was at the defeat by QPR on the opening day of the campaign but has been away in Ireland.

Barnsley face Derby County on Saturday. The next game after that is a fortnight later at Blackpool on September 13.

Goalkeeper Heinz Muller could be back for that match after successfully playing 83 minutes for Barnsley Reserves last night in a 3-3 draw with Rotherham United at Oakwell.

Muller has recovered from knee surgery which kept him out of football for seven months.

"He's come through fine, he's a little bit stiff from not having kicked with that foot. He won't be ready for Saturday though," Davey declared.

"The important thing is that mentally he's come through a game. My opinion is he could be ready after the international break."

Prolific teenage striker Jamil Adam scored twice against Rotherham. He converted a penalty after a foul by Rotherham keeper Steve Cann on Reuben Lazarus.

Adam's second was a 25 yard shot while centre back Rob Atkinson headed home Barnsley's third goal.

Barnsley Reserves: Muller, Grundy, Branson, Atkinson, Lazarus, Fearnehough, Taylor, Butterfield, Mostto, Adam, Mellor. Subs: Letheren, Warburton, Crapper, Scargill, Bennett.

Millers reserves were two down early on. A Jamie Yates double levelled it at half-time and after Barnsley led again, sub Marc Newsham marked his first appearance of the season with the equaliser five minutes from time. Trialists Marcus Haber and Omar Garcia both played.

Rotherham United manager Mark Robins is banking on new signing Andy Nicholas being 'hungry' after failing to get fixed up during the close season.

The 25-year-old left back signed for Rotherham on Tuesday lunchtime and then was plunged straight into the Carling Cup tie against Wolves.

He had been released by Swindon at the end of last season.
