Davey poised to buy
BARNSLEY owner Patrick Cryne is expecting to give the okay to a couple of summer signings.
Manager Simon Davey brought in over a dozen new faces ahead of last season. This time around Cryne is looking to endorse much less transfer business.
"We'll focus on a striker and maybe a natural left winger," he explained.
"You should expect to see changes less radical than the previous year.
"We will need to make some changes because each year you have to reassess your position for recruitment. So we would expect the club to bring in key players in key positions, like another striker.
"Generally I think everyone recognises that we've created a lot of chances and not converted them.
"The league was so finely balanced this year, it all hinged on converting opportunities. So we were a little disappointed in that regard. Our strikers came good in the key cup games. The statistics on hitting the woodwork were quite impressive. That can be the margin on which games rest."
He added: "We've often been asking people to play on the wrong flank. We may be looking for a naturally left-footed left-back.
"And those players who haven't made the breakthrough, we'll be looking to move some of those on."
Davey and the players have returned from an end-of-season break in Spain and the manager is expected to begin his wheeling and dealing this week.
He has to decide whether to offer Daniel Nardiello terms. The striker has been on loan from QPR and looks set to leave there.
Although striker Kim Christensen was in Barnsley's squad for the last game of the season, he and midfielder Andy Johnson look the likeliest of the under-contract players to leave Oakwell.
