Reds recruit: David Cotterill is determined to help Barnsley

NEW signing David Cotterill is chomping at the bit to make his Barnsley debut.

But the former Sheffield United and Swansea City winger doesn’t expect to force his way straight into the Reds’ starting line-up despite his international and Premier League pedigree.

“It will probably be a case of getting my match sharpness back, but you only get your match sharpness through playing games,” said Cotterill, who could make his first Barnsley bow at home to his former club Portsmouth tomorrow.

Cotterill spent a 15-game loan spell with Pompey last season having been cast out into the wilderness with limited opportunities with the Swans.

And the 24-year-old, hungry to get his career back on track, chose the option of playing again as opposed to relaxing on a beach for the rest of the summer.

“I made my debut for Portsmouth against Barnsley, so hopefully on Saturday I’ll be making my debut for Barnsley against Portsmouth,” added Cotterill. The sooner I get thrown in the better to be honest, but hopefully I can just get a few games under my belt now because I’ve not played much over the last year or so. I want to help the club as much as I can and play as many games as I can.

“I had good times at Sheffield United and I know the area, so hopefully I can have good times at Barnsley.”

And Cotterill sees himself fitting in nicely on the left wing at his new club, with his natural instinct to attack.

“I prefer to play on the left wing, that’s where I played for Swansea. I enjoy cutting in and linking up play,” he said. “But as long as I’m playing then I’m going to be happy. I’ll play anywhere to help the team out. The team has been doing well so it’s not going to be easy for me, but wherever the manager decides to play me I’ll be happy.”

Left-back Jay McEveley has recovered from a knee injury and is available for this weekend’s match, but midfielder Stephen Dawson and defender Bobby Hassell both remained sidelined with injury.
