Butterfield to stake claim for Reds place
BARNSLEY young gun Jacob Butterfield says next season is going to be the biggest of his career.
A product of the Reds youth system, Butterfield broke into the first team in 2007 when he made his senior debut against Newcastle United.
But since then has had limited opportunities to shine with just five first team appearances and four sub showings under his belt.
"It's been really frustrating not playing but I've had a meeting with the gaffer and he's told me to come back next season and give it my best shot to get in the team," said Butterfield.
"I think I'm good enough for the first team but obviously over the last few seasons the manager has gone with more experienced players; you have to respect his decision.
"But that doesn't stop me from wanting to be in the side. I'm in the last year of my contract, so this is probably the biggest season of my career."
Butterfield turns 19 soon and, with the reserve team scrapped, knows the only way he will force his way into the side will be to impress in closed-door friendlies and during training.
"I thought I've done well in the games that I've played and a lot of fans have backed me to get into the side," added Butterfield.
"It's been tough with the team struggling, the gaffer has stuck with experience probably because he's been under a lot of pressure.
"But with there being no reserve team I've got to work really hard to try and force my way into the team.
"I signed a professional deal when I was 17, so I'm disappointed I've not made more progress.
"I wanted to kick on last year but didn't get many chances, so this next season is going to be massive.
"I want to stay at this club but only time will tell. It's up to me to put myself in the frame for a regular place. Hopefully I can impress in pre-season training."
