Betting: Bookies back Owls win

Sheffield Wednesday’s revival was derailed on Tuesday as they went down at home to Burnley, a result that saw the Owls slip back into the bottom three, so perhaps boss Dave Jones will be glad of the distraction of the FA Cup.

Wednesday have been paired with League One opposition in MK Dons and accordingly, with home advantage, are 23/20 favourites at BetVictor to book their place in the fourth round at the first attempt. Stan James meanwhile, rate the visitors at 5/2 to cause a mini-upset and also at 5/2, this time courtesy of bet365, is the stalemate.

The latter might lure some punters and William Hill chalk 13/2 against a 1-1 scoreline.

However, Wednesday’s opponents aren’t in the best of form and that, allied with the Owls’ slightly elevated league status, points to a slender home success at Hillsborough, where bet365 offer 10/3 about Jones’ men sneaking it by a one-goal margin.

Along similar lines, Skybet rate Wednesday at 15/2 to card a 2-1 victory, it’s 9/2 (Paddy Power) for the Owls to prevail after an even first period.

Also up against a team from a lower division are Sheffield United, who head to League Two outfit Oxford and BetVictor have installed the Blades as 13/10 favourites ahead of the Kassam Stadium contest.

A couple of shaky performances from Danny Wilson’s team have kept those odds relatively high, as has the U’s run of four straight wins but United’s extra quality should ultimately tell and they’re 10/1 courtesy of Stan James to notch twice without reply.

Alternatively, there’s bet365’s 5/2 for the Blades to be in front after 45 and 90 minutes while travelling supporters expecting a closer affair can take on a 1-0 triumph for Wilson’s side at odds of 15/2 (Skybet).

At Oakwell, BetVictor rate Barnsley at 9/5 to arrest a run of three consecutive defeats by carding a cup triumph against Championship counterparts Burnley, who are 12/5 via Ladbrokes to force a replay. Stan James price Rotherham at 6/5 to ease into round four at the expense of Aldershot away.

Doncaster face a League One fixture and at 3/4 with BetVictor should beat struggling Colchester. Finally, in League Two, bet365 mark 13/8 against a Chesterfield success at Wycombe.
