The expectations of every football fan in the land will be cranked up this weekend as the new season begins.

Sheffield fans can expect the usual mix of tears, tantrums and theatre as they aim to get back to where they think they belong. The Blades have freshened up their squad and talented youngsters like Slew and Maguire give reason for optimism

Owls fans will be buoyed by the signing of David Prutton and should be tight as ever under Gary Megson. United are 9/1 to win the title, 5/2 to get promoted and 10/11 to finish in the Top 6. The Owls are much shorter at 11/2, 13/8 and 4/7 respectively. The price of the season match bet between the two has moved again. It is now 8/13 on Wednesday and 6/5 on United. All the money has been for the Owls.

Chesterfield will surprise a few people this year. I like John Sheridan and a few shrewdies have backed them at 10/1 (now 8/1) to get promoted. I wouldn’t put anyone off backing them at 7/4 to win at Tranmere as well. Donny and Barnsley are favourites to go down at 2/1 and 6/4 respectively. Yet Donny are too good to go down! Barnsley might though. Finally get your bets on August Manager of the Month. John Sheridan is 8/1, Gary Megson and Danny Wilson are 12/1. In the Championship Keith Hill is 12/1 and Sean O’Driscoll 14/1. In League Two, Andy Scott is 9/1.
