If he resists the temptation to go elsewhere, it is likely Chris O’Grady will spearhead Barnsley’s attack when they host Sheffield Wednesday in a pre-season friendly this summer.
Danny Wilson’s side welcome the Owls to Oakwell on August 2, kick-off 1pm, a week before the Football League season begins, and the warm-up match could be the third time O’Grady has played against his old club since Dave Jones controversially decided to offload the striker to their South Yorkshir rivals last year. He started in both of their Championship meetings in the 2013/14 season as Barnsley failed to stave off the threat of relegation.
The local derby comes just three days after Wednesday entertain troubled Premier League club Newcastle United. Away friendlies at Bury and York City have also been lined up but have yet to be confirmed.
Owls teenager Simon Hanna, meanwhile, has signed his first professional deal. The Northern Ireland Under-19 international, who skippered Wednesday’s Under-18 side this season, has agreed a one-year deal. He said. “To sign for a club the size of Sheffield Wednesday is a dream come true.”
*Danny Cadamarteri, who played for nine clubs during his playing days, has been handed a coaching role in Wednesday’s academy.
