The Reds have scored just eight goals in nine games since Sam Winnall and Conor Hourihane left in January - and three of those came in one game, at Hourihane’s Aston Villa.

And Heckingbottom, speaking after his side’s midweek defeat at QPR, said: “We need to be taking our chances. We were loose in front of goal and that was our problem.

“We need to be clinical at one end and ruthless down the other.

“We created lots of chances and didn’t take them. That’s always going to be a problem when that happens.”

The hosts rarely threatened at Loftus Road, but it was two crosses that led to their goals.

And Heckingbottom was quick to admit his charges need to be cutting those attacks out before the danger develops.

He added: “Their two goals came from their only two shots on target so that’s a blow.

“That was the story of the game, they may only have had two on target but we missed out on possession a bit too.”

“The first goal the cross came in too easily and it was just little things like that,” he continued.

“Stuff like throws getting into feet too easily and balls coming into the box.

“Fair enough we defended the box well and the ball came off the lad’s standing foot, and there’s not much you can do about it, but we need to stop that ball coming in.

“We were a little bit off the pace out of possession and that made us easier to play against.

“I didn’t know the second was an own goal until I watched it back, but again it’s dealing with things at the source higher up the pitch.”
