RAMPANT Barnsley ripped Scunthorpe to shreds in their final pre-season test at Glanford Park.

RAMPANT Barnsley ripped Scunthorpe to shreds in their final pre-season test at Glanford Park.

Alan Knill’s hosts simply couldn’t live with Keith Hill’s men in the first half as Craig Davies (2), trialists Ricardo Vaz Te and Kyel Reid, and Nathan Doyle all netted before the interval. Hill said: “A clean sheet is really important, while some of the football in the first half was outstanding. But it is still only pre-season. People keep reminding me of that, but we can only do what we can do. The belief is there, the players trust in one another and I trust the players and they trust in me.”

Scott Wiseman set up the opener for Vaz Te after just eight minutes.

His run and cross for the Portuguese front-man culminated with the ball being smashed into the roof of the Iron net from close range. The lead was doubled on the quarter-hour mark, with Vaz Te this time the provider.

He squared for the onrushing Davies who could scarcely miss from five yards out.

The 20th minute brought a super goal from Reid, as he twisted and turned before slotting neatly past keeper Josh Lillis from 15 yards.

Just past the half-hour mark the Reds made it 4-0 with Davies again showing excellent quality as he charged through the middle before rounding Lillis and slotting into an empty net.

It was already a devastating performance from the visitors, but they went even further in front a minute before the break as Doyle volleyed home following a pinpoint cross into the box from the livewire Davies.

Unsurprisingly Hill’s men eased off a little in the second period, with the closest to a sixth coming when Davies blasted over from close range after a smart cross in from Jim O’Brien.
