BARNSLEY’s pre-season ended with defeat last night at the hands of League One side Crewe Alexandra.
A makeshift Reds side were beaten by a single goal at Gresty Road on a night when manager Keith Hill cast a final eye over trialists Ibrahima Sonko and Scott Hogan.
Former Ipswich, Reading, Stoke, Portsmouth and Brentford centre-back Sonko and former Rochdale and current Stocksbridge winger Hogan both played the full 90 minutes against the Railwaymen.
But solid performances from the duo couldn’t prevent the Reds slipping to their second pre-season defeat, with three draws and one victory from their other friendly outings .
Thankfully there were no new injury worries for Hill who has already lost striker Mido, winger Toni Silva and goalkeeper Luke Steele to injury before the start of the new campaign.
And that was most probably why Hill opted to shuffle his pack with three of the club’s most promising youngsters handed the chance to shine, with six more included on the substitute’s bench.
However, some slack marking allowed defender Adam Dugdale to head the hosts into a 20th-minute lead from skipper Ashley Westwood’s pinpoint free-kick which caught the Reds napping.
