BARNSLEY bowed out of the Carling Cup at the first hurdle for the second year running as they were beaten by League 2 side Morecambe.

Last year Keith Hill was the manager of a Rochdale side that beat the Reds but this time around he was made to suffer as two second half goals gave Jim Bentley his first ever win as a Football League manager.

Barnsley enjoyed the greater share of the possession and were denied on several occasions by the Shrimps’ former Chesterfield keeper Barry Roche but two second half goals from Danny Carlton and former Rotherham man Kevin Ellison gave the League 2 side an unexpected victory.

Carlton opened the scoring five minutes after the break when he slotted home Izak Reid’s right wing cross at the near post after a neat dummy from Lewis Alessandra.

Barnsley went close to equalising through a Danny Haynes header that flew inches over the top and the same man was denied a free run on goal by Roche who came rushing from his goal to make an excellent block after a back pass from Stewart Drummond.

Substitute David Perkins, playing against his former club, went close with a shot from the edge of the box as Barnsley stepped up the pace but the Shrimps sealed the tie four minutes from time when substitute Ellison scored from close range after Carlton’s first shot was blocked.

The home side enjoyed the greater share of the possession in the first half and passed the ball around neatly to forge several openings with Roche making excellent blocks from Jacob Butterfield and Ricardo Vaz Te with the latter missing a golden chance to open the scoring on 35 minutes when he headed over from six yards when he should have scored.

Butterfield caused the visitors all sorts of problems in the opening stages as Barnsley threatened to run riot. On seven minutes he clipped an effort just wide of the right hand post and moments later went closer with another shot from the edge of the area that was well saved by Roche low to his left hand side.

Morecambe always looked a threat on the break with Gary McDonald hitting a shot into the side netting when he should have done better after a neat Alessandra lay off and Will Haining blasted a free kick well wide from distance.
