Sheffield Wednesday Under 21s and rivals Barnsley fought out an entertaining 2-2 draw under the floodlights at Oakwell.

Goals from Ryan Meadows and Matt Young ruled out an early strike from Jean-Yves M’Voto before substitute and Wednesday fan George Maris hit the leveller for the home side.

The game presented players from both sides with opportunities to impress.

Barnsley included fringe players M’voto, who filled in as captain, and Kane Hemmings a chance to impress enough to work their way back into Danny Wilson’s thinking.

Brad Abbott has also been in and around the first team fold lately and he started, while trialist Ryan Towner was handed another chance to stake his claim for a contract.

Midfielder Rhys McCabe was the most familiar name in the Wednesday line-up, as youngsters around him got the rare experience of playing in a stadium. Barnsley have only claimed one point in the Under 21 league this campaign but they started the brighter of the two sides.

Darren McKnight was the first to test a keeper. The Northern Irish youngster showed excellent skill down the left to work himself into a shooting opportunity but Joe Wildsmith in the Wednesday goal was quickly out to deny him.

But Barnsley went ahead on 20 minutes when the impressive McKnight swung in a dangerous corner, which M’Voto bundled in through a crowd of bodies.

It could have been two when George Smith’s cross was flicked into the path of Hemmings by Rhys Oates, but the striker failed to get a strong connection on his shot.

Hemmings was then denied by a terrific one handed stop from Wildsmith following smart build-up down the right hand flank.

French striker Franck Betra had Wednesday’s first effort on target, creating space in the box before firing straight at Davies. Wednesday managed to level up the scores on 38 minutes when Meadows headed in unchallenged at the far post, after Rafa Floro had crafted an opening down the left .

Captain Young put Wednesday ahead on 48 minutes.

The ball fell kindly on the volley to him and he powered his effort low and into the bottom corner.

Substitute Maris then squeezed in the leveller on 70 minutes. A cross ran away from Wildsmith but was picked up by the striker who somehow got it between the near post and the ‘keeper.

Betra almost created a winner. He found space down the right and prodded a ball across the box but no Wednesday forwards were alert enough to take advantage.

Rhys Oates fired a late shot straight at Wildsmith as the game finished deservedly level.
