Former Reds loanee Ryan Williams has rejoined the club on a two-year deal from Championship outfit Fulham.

The Australian youth international’s arrival was announced on stage at the Barnsley’s annual open day at Oakwell yesterday.

Williams spent a short loan spell at the club between October and December last year, impressing in his seven appearances before injury forced him to return to Fulham.

The 21-year-old fits the young and hungry ethos that manager Lee Johnson is trying to create at the club, and admitted that it was the Barnsley boss’s vision that convinced him to come back.

“I’m delighted to have joined Barnsley on a permanent basis, as I much admire the playing philosophy of Lee Johnson,” said the former Portsmouth man.

“I’m extremely excited to have the opportunity to work with him on a daily basis and to have the platform of this great club with its wonderful supporters to showcase my talent and skills.”

The Reds have been committed to bringing in promising young talent this summer, and have beaten off Championship clubs to a number of signings.

Williams has been impressed with the recruitment undertaken so far, and declared that it was a key factor in choosing to return.

“One of the reasons for my decision was that lots of other young and talented players, such as Marc Roberts and Alfie Mawson, have also decided to come and play for Lee and to work under him even though they had opportunities to join Championship clubs,” he added.

“This was further enhanced when you see gifted young players such as Ben Pearson also choose to join Barnsley on loan ahead of Championship clubs. I’m looking forward to getting to work on the training ground with Lee, the staff and the players as soon as possible.”

Likely to be joining Williams on the training ground this week is 21-year-old Frickley Athletic striker Reece Thompson, who is believed to be starting a one-week trial at Oakwell today.

Thompson scored 16 times in 32 appearances for the Evo-Stick League side last season, and recently completed a trial at York City.
