BARNSLEY boss David Flitcroft believes new signing Peter Ramage is the club’s “golden nugget”
Flitcroft worked his magic to sign Crystal Palace defender Ramage on a season-long loan with just 90 minutes of the transfer deadline window to spare.
And he believes the vastly-experienced right-back and centre-back is the perfect calibre of player he’s been looking for to strengthen his struggling defence.
The Reds had shipped an alarming 17 goals in six games before last Saturday’s much-needed 2-1 derby victory at home to Huddersfield
Speaking exclusively to The Star, Flitcroft said: “Just look at his experience, Peter’s an excellent player.
“He’s one of those golden nuggets that just fits into a squad. I really think he’s going to be a very important player for us.”
“He’s got good experience and is the type of player you can rely on and he’s been there and done it in pressure situations. You always look for those sorts of players.”
Ramage is expected to feature either in the centre of defence or, more probably, at right-back to take the workload off Jim O’Brien and Scott Wiseman.
“To be honest I’ve felt we’ve been a bit light in that [right-back] area, so it’s somewhere I wanted to strengthen.
“Jim’s done a good job at right-back, that’s Jim for you. He’ll work hard whatever position he’s asked to play.
“But it’s been difficult for him with the players he’s come up against. We’ve got Peter now though and he gives us more flexibility.
“I’m happy with the business we’ve done and players we’ve got. We’ve got a lot of plug-in players who can fit into different positions, which always helps.”
Meanwhile, loan striker Marcus Pedersen is likely to feature for Norway in their World Cup qualifying clash at home to Cyprus tomorrow.
Reds youngster Rhys Oates has joined Gainsborough Trinity on a month’s loan. Released keeper Ben Alnwick has joined Charlton.
