Liverpool loan signing Ryan McLaughlin will make his Barnsley debut away to Charlton Athletic this afternoon.
Northern Ireland Under-21 international right-back McLaughlin has replaced current right-back Scott Wiseman in Danny Wilson’s team for their clash with the Addicks at The Valley.
Wiseman left the club on a free transfer yesterday and joined League One Preston North End in an initial 18-month deal.
The 28-year-old, who made his senior international debut for Gibraltar last year, was joined by striker Chris Dagnall out of Oakwell.
Dagnall, who has been on loan at Coventry City, was released from his contract by mutual consent and is searching for a new club.
However, Wilson stressed that the arrival of McLaughlin and Stoke City loan winger Brek Shea doesn’t mean that there will be wholesale changes at Oakwell in the January transfer window.
Looking ahead to his side’s clash with the Addicks, Wilson said: “They [Charlton] are in a very similar position to us, they’re like a lot of teams down at the bottom of the division who just can’t put three or four results together which gets you out of trouble.
“They’re in a similar area to us and, although they’re a few points above us, I still feel as though they’re a team we’ve to try and target. “We have to get up there [in the table] and get level on points with them if we can.
“The pressure is on the home team at the moment. The expectation is high on them, so we can go there relaxed, play our football and see what it brings.
“We’ve had a couple of great results away to in-form teams recently, so we’ll go there with plenty of confidence. We won’t be phased.”
Winger Dale Jennings will miss out with a heel injury, while Bobby Hassell (calf) and keeper Luke Steele (groin) are nursing injuries. Wilson expects Steele to play, though.
Meanwhile 19-year-old midfielder Wade Joyce has signed for St Johnstone on a free transfer until the end of the season.
