Veteran goalkeeper Mike Pollitt filled Barnsley’s net tonight, as the Reds sought in vain to shore up their leaky defence.
The 41-year-old arrived on a 28-day loan deal from Championship rivals Wigan Athletic.
But the shell-shocked backstopper was soon fishing the ball out of the Oakwell net.
And by the end of the night, he’d been beaten FIVE times.
Previously, the Reds had been beaten 5-2 (Blackburn, Sat) and 4-0 (Wigan, Aug 3) so far this term.
And Reds manager David Flitcroft had desperately wanted to make sure there was no similar embarrassment tonight, at Oakwell, against Southampton, in the Capital One Cup, second round.
Uruguayan midfielder Gastón Ramírez was an early problem the Barnsley needed to deal with as the 22 year old probed the home defence.
And on 25 minutes, Steven Davis made it 1-0 to the visitors after stroking home a right footer past Pollitt.
Jack Cork could have made it worse for the South Yorkshire side, but missed to the left of the target.
Southampton, despite nine changes, were very comfortable leaders at half time.
And they went further ahead when Jay Rodriguez scored another on 48 minutes.
A collapse looked imminent - but the Reds hit back four minutes later when Marcus Pedersen engineered an opening for Stephen Dawson to make it 1-2.
Yet in reality it had been a flattering interlude: on 65 minutes Zambian international Emmanuel Mayuka popped in the visitors third.
Worse was to come with a penalty: Pollitt got a touch to Davis’s spot kick, but it still went over for the fourth nail in Barnsley’s coffin.
Jimmy McNulty had conceded the penalty for a foul on Mayuka.
The fifth was a painful sight for those who had stayed to the end: Ramirez scoring.
