Fixtures: Sheffield Wednesday, United, Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster

IT'S a bumper start to the new season at Hillsborough - Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley clash in an opening day South Yorkshire derby.

It guarantees a huge gate for the first day of the season on August 8 and added extra spice to the new season's fixtures.

Sheffield United have a 'big one' to start with too - they go to newly-relegated Middlesbrough. The first home game in The Championship for the Blades will be against Watford who this week appointed Malky Mackay as their new manager.

The first city derby meeting is early on - they duo face each other at Bramall Lane on Saturday, September 19. The return at Hillsborough is a late one however - not until April 17, just three matches from the end.

Wednesday's first away clash is at Darren Ferguson's newly-promoted Peterborough and they follow this up with a trip to another of the Championship's newcomers - relegated Newcastle on Wednesday, September 19.

The return with the Tynesiders is Boxing Day which may well ensure a full house at Hillsborough.

United travel to newly-promoted Leicester on Boxing Day and their Christmas home clash two days later is against Preston.

Neil Warnock won't be back at the Lane until December 12 with Crystal Palace.

Barnsley follow up their Owls opener with an opening home game against Coventry City - which was also the Reds' first home game last season when the lost 2-1. They will host the Blades on November 7 and the first of the clashes with Doncaster Rovers will be at the Keepmoat on October 17 with the return on March 27.

Rovers start with a trip to Watford and their first home game is against Preston.

Rotherham United open up at home to Accrington whilst John Sheridan's first game in charge of Chesterfield will be a long haul to newly promoted Torquay.

The Millers entertain Chesterfield on September 5.
