Ennis in contention for award

SHEFFIELD superstar Jessica Ennis has been nominated for the prestigious 2011 Laureus World Sports Awards.

The Woodseats athlete, who turns 25 at the end of the month, is on the shortlist for the World Sportswoman of the Year prize. She faces competition from three tennis players; Belgium's Kim Clijsters, three-time Laureus winner Serena Williams and Denmark's world No 1 Caroline Wozniacki - plus American ski star Lindsey Vonn and Croatian high jump sensation Blanka Vlasic.

Ennis followed in the steps of the great Carolina Kluft by adding the 2010 European Championship heptathlon title to her World Championship gold medal of 2009, setting a new championship record of 6,823 points.

She also won the pentathlon gold at the World Indoor Championship in Doha.

The Laureus World Sports Awards, which recognise sporting achievement during the calendar year 2010, are the premier honours on the international sporting calendar. The winners will be revealed on Monday February 7 in Abu Dhabi.
