Ding Ning the world ranked number 7 player, sprang a surprise for the capacity audience as she dismantled World no.1 Guo Yan (28), to take the women’s crown at the 66th English Open with a 11-8, 11-8, 7-11, 11-3, 11-7 victory.

It was a triumph for youth over experience in an explosive final, as the left handed 20 year old, outgunned Guo in a series of rapid fire rallies which stunned the partisan crowd.

In the men’s final, 26 year old Chen Qi, the world no.14, pulled off a further shock as he defeated 30 year old Ma Lin seeded no.3. Chen, the left handed, number 8 seed came through 11-5, 11-4, 11-13, 14-12, 11-4 against Ma - the world no.5 and 2008 Olympic champion.
