World champion Tom Daley has admitted a podium place at this week’s FINA World Series event in Sheffield is not his top priority as he continues to learn his new, more difficult set of dives.
Daley has struggled in the 10metre platform so far this season after adding four new dives to his routine in order to increase his tariff ahead of next year’s Olympics.
The 16-year-old finished fifth in the season-opener in Moscow before failing even to reach the final at last month’s second World Series meet at the Water Cube in Beijing.
“The new dives are going okay,” he said. “It has been a very difficult year for me but at this stage it is about making sure I can complete them as many times as I can.
“It is all about next year leading into the World Cup because that is the Olympic qualifier.”
