Rotherham’s Ben Swift finished third in the Time Trial title at the British Championships in Ayrshire.
The result is an excellent achievement by the 25-year-old Team Sky rider who, by his own admission, is no fan of time trialing.
However, it shows he’s in good form after a season disrupted by injury and illness and could be a contender for Sunday’s Road Race.
The TT was won by Alex Dowsett for the third successive year. His winning time of one hour, two minutes and 30 seconds was enough to see off runner-up of Matthew Bottrill of Team Drag2Zero and Swift, who both finished 21 seconds further back.
Dowsett’s victory wasn’t without drama though as the Movistar rider was just a few corners into the first of two laps round the 26.4-kilometres Stewarton course when a tyre malfunction caused him to come off his machine.
But after a swift bike change the 24-year-old - who registered his first Grand Tour stage win in the Giro d’Italia time trial in May - recovered to claim victory.
Olympic champion Joanna Rowsell claimed her first ever road crown in the Women’s Time Trial.
The 24-year-old followed up her Team Pursuit gold medal at London 2012 by speeding to victory round two laps of a shortened 17.6km route.
Her winning time of 49 minutes and 57 seconds gave the Wiggle Honda rider a comfortable 32-second margin ahead of runner up Lizzie Armitstead of Boels Dolmans.
