While Chris Froome will start as favourite to retain his title the stage into Sheffield could play a vital role in deciding who will win the 2014 Tour de France
Gary Clifton, who heads Sheffield City Council’s Major Sports Event Unit, said: “We’re really excited about the route. As soon as it comes into Sheffield it starts hitting some incredible climbs through Midhopestones and Bradfield. Some of the descents are frightening.
“The cyclists are suggesting that the stage, because of the hills, could play a role in deciding the top ten places in General Classification for the race. From a spectators point of view it will be phenomenal.”
